About the Centre for Dairy Information

About the Centre for Dairy Information

The creation of the Centre for Dairy Information has quickly established a new era of industry cooperation, developing a single, comprehensive and integrated database. This allows the storage and analysis of a wide range of data, transforming data into knowledge for informed management decisions.

This wealth of information not only allows the CDI to be an industry storage resource, but importantly become an analytical centre of dairy information for management, benchmarking, education, information and research purposes. Development continues as the CDI welcomes more organisations as they become concept partners and help expand the facility.

One important recent development has been the employment of the CDI by DairyCo breeding+ as the vehicle by which the proof evaluations are made available to breeders and the wider industry. Within the ‘Breeding Improvement’ section of the new site, you will now find a simple matrix containing all published evaluation data for all dairy breeds. Online Herd Genetic Reports are also accessible after registering with DairyCo.

‘Breeding Improvement’ is designed to provide all a breeder needs in terms of genetic information. Bull selection tools are available in the form of Bull Selector and the mating program Webmate. Both facilities are independent and can help facilitate breeding programs. A link to Webreg is also provided for simple online registrations and BCMS passport applications.

‘Health and Welfare’ seeks to provide a wealth of information on this all important aspect of herd and individual cow management and includes points to consider when breeding for Health and Welfare. Regular disease analysis and forecasts are provided by the National Animal Disease Information Service (NADIS) who report monthly on the UK situation.

‘Industry Statistics’ provides some overall performance correlation figures and allows a breeder to benchmark his own classified herd against National trends. Kingshay provide monthly updates of costings and margins. Herd Solution Sheets are also available here as are links to DairyCo herd management tools.

‘Breed Societies’ hosts direct links to functionalities available within each breed society website. Useful breed society contact details can be found here along with more information on each of the CDI concept partners.

The Centre for Dairy Information is special to the industry and special to individual farmers as it becomes an invaluable tool in the future development of the industry, as demand for validated independent information intensifies.
